Greatly Loved

Nothingstrengthens my heart like the revelation that I am greatly loved by the God ofthe universe. His unconditional love causes my weak heart to beat with passionfor Him. As the light of this truth dawns across the landscapes of mylife, sowing and reaping takes place. God’s love is active. He is sowinglove into my heart and those seeds begin to rapidly sprout. Empty, coldprayers and passionless devotions are overtaken with a new crop of divine love.

Thisplanting is not content to remain in the safe confines of my personal quietgarden. The first command of "love the Lord your God" empowersme to love myself and my neighbor. Divinelove fuels and fills my heart with acceptance, forgiveness, and sacrificial giving. True Kingdom living is built not on the brickand mortar of rules but the organic growth of love.

Expose yourself to theradiant glow of His love. You will emerge from His presence changed. Is it possible that revival or societalrevolution is waiting in the Lord’s secret chamber?

Face Difficulties

Successful people face difficulties. Ouch…is that a scary first line or what? Don’t tune out, I firmly believe that everyone can succeed.

Success is simply knowing and fulfilling God’s plan for your life.

Back to the original statement: Successful people face difficulties. No one, absolutely no one, is born a success. What sets champions, leaders, etc. you know…successful people apart from well..you know those who choose to be less, lower, unfulfilled is the willingness to face obstacles and not make excuses.

I have to ask myself this question: “Am I better at excuses than embracing obstacles?”

How do you account for twenty-three years of life with another human being? Society suggests celebrating the number of years you have been married and we do so with the giving of cards and gifts, having dinner out somewhere fancy or taking a trip somewhere you have never been together. All of those things are fine and we have done them all (although I am still holding out for that trip to NYC together) but it would seem that merely counting years together is not near enough…it doesn’t do justice to the life you have lived together.For me, I am celebrating all the triumphs we have lived together, not just the years. I am celebrating…
…a rock-solid friendship that was formed before romance became reality
…a marriage that was crafted on the firm foundation of promising to following God anywhere, anytime and at any cost
…the creating of three imperfect little boys who have brought us the most perfect of joy
…the beautiful heartache of bringing one of our parents into the warm embrace of our own home for a year only to see them live and breathe their last
… surviving disappointments, failures and starting over again with nothing in our pockets
…moving forward when the fog was so thick we couldn’t see one step in front of us
…the churches God has allowed us to serve together and the immense family that we have been privileged to be part of for ever and always
…the broken parts of ourselves that we have allowed the other to not only see but to touch and to even love, bringing His wholeness where only hollowness once was
…you…this man who is so much more than anything my sixteen-year-old heart could have dreamed up and who has loved me so completely with a passion only rivaled by God himself.I wish for every person the indescribable reality of love and grace we have in our own marriage…not perfection or fairytale days and nights, but a life of chasing the dreams God has given us and finding that, in running hard after God, we run right into each other.Happy 23rd Anniversary, Eddie.

Preparing to Speak

Recently several students have asked me to help them prepare their first sermons / Bible talks. Before they ever crack the Concordance or open the Lexicon, I recommend that they ask themselves a few questions. I try to answer these questions as I prepare a talk:

1) What is God saying to me?
2) Who will I be speaking to?
3) What does God want me to say to them?
4)When the sermon is over what do I want them to know?
5) When they leave the church what do I want them to do?

Get alone with God and answer these questions and you'll be well on your way! For the experienced communicator: what else do you ask yourself?

I spoke on gossip this weekend. There are several overtime points I want to share that were not on your note sheet.

The information shared between the gossips does not have to be FALSE to be gossip. It just has to be illegal. As Rick Warren says, "Gossip is passing on information when you are neither part of the problem nor part of the solution.
Gossip destroys true fellowship in the church. See Proverbs 26:2o

I also want to share the entire "Confetti" story here. When I found this story in a Bible Computer Program Illustration years ago the story used chicken feathers. For the purposes of our worship experience at Church on the Hill, I changed chicken feathers to confetti. Here's the story:

One time a lady, the biggest gossiper in her church, heard an especially juicy tidbit about her pastor. After she had passed the story on to a number of people in town, she found out that the rumor was false. The lady went to her pastor to apologize and ask for his forgiveness. She said that she would go back to all the people and tell them it was just a false story. The pastor agreed to forgive her, but he said that he wanted her to do something for him. He told her to go and get a sack full of chicken feathers (confetti) , take it to the main intersection of town, throw those feathers into the wind, and then come back and report to him. The lady thought it was a strange request and hesitated, but agreed to do it anyway. She did as her pastor requested and then went back to his office. "Now," said the pastor, "go back downtown and gather all those feathers again. The lady replied, "But pastor, there is no way I could ever do that. The wind has carried them all over town." The pastor smiled sadly and said, "That's true. It's the same way when you tell a story about someone else. There is no way to go around and take back what has been said."

Well Done for January 9, 2011

It was an excellent day up at Church on the Hill! I am so grateful that God is UP to something! Several folks deserve Well Done awards for this weekend's worship services.

First, Earl Brackin and the worship team created a great environment for us to seek the Lord and allow His word to challenge us.

Special thanks to Dan Bruner, Sabrina Owens, the Royal Rangers, and many others who helped clean up the confetti in the Sanctuary. Don't know what I'm talking about...confetti in church? I'll share the story later this week in my OVERTIME post.

Just in case you are new to my blog and wanted to know a little about me and family.

Eddie graduated from Ware County Senior High in Waycross, GA, and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Valdosta State College in Georgia. He became a Certified Youth Worker through an internship program led by Ray Owens, and was a student of the Berean School of the Bible and Beacon University. Beth graduated from Waycross High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in education from Valdosta State College in Georgia. Beth also became a Certified Youth Worker through Ray’s internship program. Eddie is an Ordained Minister in the Christian Alliance of Ministries and Beth is an Ordained Minister with Family Discipleship Ministries. They both volunteered and worked part-time in youth ministry serving several churches in Georgia before Eddie became the Assistant Pastor at Old Camp United Methodist Church in Carrollton, GA. Eddie then served as Youth Pastor at United Methodist congregations in Waycross, Georgia and Tarpon Springs, Florida before going to Christian Heritage Church in 1999 as Associate Pastor. After a season of church planting, Eddie and Beth returned as Senior Pastors of Christian Heritage Church on Father’s Day of 2004. They ended a joyful and fruitful season in Lake City by passing the mantle of leadership to long-time Associates Chris & Terra Jones in late 2008. Since 2008, Eddie & Beth have served the Lord through marketplace ministry and traveling ministry. They relocated to Dalton, GA in July of 2010.

The Taylor’s ministry is multi-faceted. As leaders to leaders, Eddie & Beth help lead Family Discipleship Ministries (FDM), a network of like minded ministers they formed with Ray & Sabrina Owens . FDM’s ministry emphases are training this generation in leadership development through discipleship, marketplace ministries, worship and missions. FDM’S main activities include: Eddie & Beth’s preaching & teaching ministries, the distribution of ministry resources such as CD’s, a mid-winter young adult retreat called Breakaway, a mid-winter youth retreat, and a spring ministry conference for those in church leadership who directly relate to FDM. The Taylors have been married for 22 years. They have three sons: Jacob (18); David (15); and Jonathan (11). Eddie & Beth also participate in leadership with Kid’s Aflame, a children’s and youth camp in Bradenton, FL.

Some weekends I have more content than I have time for my talks. I decided to post some of that information here rather than just returning it to the file. This past weekend we looked at talking too much.
I pretty said what I had but Dr. Lynn Murphy e-mailed me a funny story that drives the point home. Here it is:

Someone asked a fellow why he kept his mouth shut. He responded, "I'd rather be silent and be thought a fool, than to open my mouth and remove all doubt."

Unshackled

Too often I complicate matters in my life. God is calling, wooing me to the simplicity of following Christ. Jesus said,

“…who had believed in him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31b-32

If I want to mature in Christ, there is no better place to start (and continue) than freedom from the chains of sin and self. I desire to LIVE there and not trade those shackles for religious bondage.

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1

There is nothing sexy about what will happen tonight at 2:00 AM. It sounds so groovy to say Daylight Savings Time, however, nothing pops when you say Standard Time. It is so, so… standard. It’s time for a new, more exciting term.

I’m organizing a committee to end the boredom. I propose a new title for Standard Time. Perhaps something that honors a scientist, artist or a politician. What about 2:01 AM Einstein Standard Time? I am hoping to set my alarm for 6:00 AM Betty White Time. Maybe 3:05 AM Mondale Standard Time?

Bible Journey: A Man of Understanding

Proverbs 28:2 ESV When a land transgresses, it has many rulers, but with a man of understanding and knowledge, its stability will long continue.

I have a simple prayer today. I want to be man of understanding and knowledge. It doesn’t sound complicated, does it? Our society and our churches are torn like the land described in this verse. What does a man of understanding look like? It is not an easily obtained answer…if it was there would be more of them. One thing is that he is a man growing in wisdom and the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7). I am learning what that looks like in my life. I’ll share more in later posts. Pray for me.

Come Up Here

One of the most needed and often neglected tools in the leader’s tool belt is viewing life & circumstances from Heaven’s perspective. As a Christian leader, we called overseers. This is an interesting word that we don’t use very often any longer. It comes from a compound Greek word “episkopos” which literally means “one who over watches or over sees”.

As a leader we are called to help define reality for the family, group, or organization we lead. Guess what? This can not be defined by taking the temperature or looking around our circumstances. CNN or any contemporary poll can not define reality for us. Reality, true reality is only found by seeing what God sees. Relevant living and leadership must be grounded in scripture and revelation. Gasp!! Did I use such a spooky word? Through prayer and meditation the events of our life and world must be viewed through the grid of His perspective.

As John the revelator struggled with his circumstances, Jesus said to him, “Come up here and I’ll show you”(Revelation 4:1). Likewise, Asaph struggled with his circumstances until he gained the vantage point of heaven (Psalm 73). Are you confused and don’t know what to do next? Go up and gain heaven’s perspective. Things might not change but your perspective will and that will make all the difference in your attitude, life and leadership.

Leadership Nugget: Hydrate

Yesterday I was privileged to join Destination Church for their weekly staff meeting. During the meeting Pastor Rodney shared a leadership nugget on staying vibrant in ministry. It was so good I got permission to pass it on to you.

Hydrate

Because Rodney is training for a marathon, he is concerned and learning about proper hydration. Here’s a few facts:

Adult males are 60% water.
Adult females are 55% water.
In exercise and medical health dehydration is very dangerous and can be fatal.

In our spiritual life, discouragement is akin to dehydration. Jesus promised that if we believed in Him we would have a spring of living water flowing out of us (John 7:38). How do we keep our well from running dry? Just as Rodney plans to not dehydrate by “loading” on fluids before long runs, we must have a plan to fight discouragement. He suggests:

Schedule fun and recreation into your life. You must make time to refuel.
Know what drains you. You can’t always avoid those things but you must play toward your strengths (ie. your gifts, callings, and skills).
Know what fills you up. Keep your relationship with God and others fresh and clear!

Independence Day Weekend

The fertile plains of my mind were musing on must-do activities for the 4th of July weekend. Here's my list:

Go to church. Worship with your family and thank God that you were born an American. Ask God how you can use your freedom to share His love. We worshiped with Destination Church via their web campus.

Eat a hot dog or hamburger. Not from a fast-food restaurant...it should be grilled at someone's home. We are having Beth Taylor's supreme garlic -butter burgers.

Drink a coke or a pepsi. Not the sissy diet or zero versions. Nothing says "I'm an American" like 39 grams of sugar. Even the cans are patriotic.

Watch some fireworks. Traditionally we have viewed the Lake City, FL show over Lake Desoto. This year we are celebrating with thousands of our closest friends at Wild Adventures.

Watch a movie on DVD. We have viewed several this weekend. One of our old standbys that really delivered was Two Weeks Notice.

Play a game as a family. We played Bull Crap. Jonathan dominated once again. I hope he grows out of his "victory dance".

Like A Dream

I'm sure people that much smarter and more experienced than I am have written on dreams. I am not writing a complete treatise on dreams just a thought I had this morning. In Psalm 139:18 the psalmist says:

"I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, You are still with me!"

In context there is no indication that the writer is sleeping. It seems to me that the writer is so carried away with his meditations on the goodness of God that it seems like a dream to Him. Suddenly He comes to the realization that he is not asleep...God is still with Him.
I was convicted. So often I am so focused on what is not happening that I miss what God has done. Perhaps If I would spend more time reflecting on His abundance and less time focused on my needs the two would seem closer together, more like dream.

A Reflection Question

One thought that is haunting me this morning is this: Am I focused on what I am doing or who I am becoming? If there is any core belief to this life-giving gospel it is that Christ empowers to live from the inside out. It is so easy to slip back into a “gospel by subtraction”. In other words, the “I don’t gospel”…i.e.…I don’t smoke, drink, etc…

For years I tried to add fruit. You know: “act” more loving, kind, joyful, and so forth. In stark contrast, Jesus promises an abundant life that is fruitful. This agricultural metaphor speaks of a life that is growing and becoming. Fruit proceeds from a healthy plant not vice versa.

The Christian life is not about trying harder but allowing the grace of God to produce the fruit of the spirit in and through you. In 2010 I want to be more…like Him, the real me, and that will be an adventure!

Love? I am speechless

I wrote this in response to the question: “what does love look like to you?”

Often real love leaves you speechless: seeing your bride marching down the aisle towards you, the birth of your children. In those moments none of the words that have crossed the lips of man can fully or adequately describe what is in your heart. God had a great idea to correct that: "The Word became flesh"! Ultimate love is a noun, a person: Jesus the Christ. In His incarnation love was best described and demonstrated not as a feeling but in Him.

For us, as humans, love is a verb. It is a choice to passionately and sacrificially prefer and honor Him and those for whom He died. Those are my thoughts at 3:30 am.

Twists & Turns

Just when you think that you have the will of God figured out He throws you a curveball. Memorial Drive Wildcat alumnus will remember that I wasn’t great at hitting fastballs (or anything) much less curveballs.

A Funny Memory

Our youngest son, Jonathan broke his right arm on Monday and had a cast placed on his right arm yesterday. I was thinking about him this morning and had a funny memory.

When I was a sophomore at Ware County Senior High in Waycross, I played on the JV football team. I broke my left thumb and had a cast very similar to the one Jonathan is now sporting. One night during my sleep I pickup my arm and dropped it on my forehead. I woke up with a terrible headache and a nice lump on my head.

That might explain me. :) Do you have a fun story from your childhood to share with the tens of readers who visit this spot?

What do you do when you have too much to do? You START! Too often we are paralyzed by analysis. After you have done due diligence, consulted with the Lord, and your accountability…act.

God honors us as we act on His behalf. After you have prayed, get up and go! Too often we fret rather than start. God will adjust you as you move.

I had a great weekend. We spent lots of time working around the house, loading boxes, and preparing to move.

Yesterday we had dinner with the Kurtz family. It was a ton of fun and of course, the food was terrific!

Today was very satisfying. It was an encouraging morning worshipping with the family of God at CHC. Pastor Justin did a great job leading worship and Pastor Chris brought another incredible message.

We spent the balance of the day loading boxes. Not a lot of rest these days for the Taylors…pray for us this week.

Genesis 12:1" The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you."

This sounds great and very spiritual unless you are Abram (later Abraham). I bet that it was embarrassing telling their family and friends they didn't know where God wanted them. You see their house had sold and they need to move in in eleven days. Wait- that's us..not the Abram's. Don't let the title mislead you... we are not going to the United Kingdom. UK for us at least at the moment stands for UNKNOWN. We have felt God's pleasure toward two locations. If you are a christian and read this post then please pray for us to hear clearly and respond boldly and in faith. Oh, the adventure of it all!

No Good, Terrible, Very Itchy Day

Okay it was previously reported on Facebook that I had encountered very itchy Chiggers or Red Bugs at Crossway Church. That was inaccurate...I now think it is very itchy poison ivy. So after coming the web for a solution, I thought I would pull on the power of the blogosphere.

Anniversary - The Call

Today's date is July 7, 2009. It has been two years since thousands of us gathered at LP Field / Titan Stadium to fast, worship, and pray. To the casual observer things have gotten worse not better. The Religious Right is out of power & low on influence, we've lost a seat on the Supreme Court, and the economy has gone to crap.
So was it just an exercise in religion and nothing happened? Hardly! There are advances in the Kingdom of God that are not seen to the naked eye. The power of God is never seen in demonstrations of political power or economics. As a matter of fact we have a couple of verses to the contrary:

Zechariah 4:6 (NIV) "So he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty."
1 Corinthians 2:4 (English Standard Version) "and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,"

Here's to the power of prayer. Don't give up!

Oswald Chambers on Worry and Fretting

Oswald Chamber's classic devotional My Utmost For His Highest has challenged many believers to live free and walk closely with their Savior since it was published in 1927. Like most days, today's entry convicts me in my thoughts, attitudes, and actions. Here's today entry:

Psalm 37:8
Do not fret— it only causes harm —Psalm 37:8
Oswald Chambers - "Fretting means getting ourselves "out of joint" mentally or spiritually. It is one thing to say, "Do not fret," but something very different to have such a nature that you find yourself unable to fret. It’s easy to say, "Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him" ( Psalm 37:7 ) until our own little world is turned upside down and we are forced to live in confusion and agony like so many other people. Is it possible to "rest in the Lord" then? If this "Do not" doesn’t work there, then it will not work anywhere. This "Do not" must work during our days of difficulty and uncertainty, as well as our peaceful days, or it will never work. And if it will not work in your particular case, it will not work for anyone else. Resting in the Lord is not dependent on your external circumstances at all, but on your relationship with God Himself.

Worrying always results in sin. We tend to think that a little anxiety and worry are simply an indication of how wise we really are, yet it is actually a much better indication of just how wicked we are. Fretting rises from our determination to have our own way. Our Lord never worried and was never anxious, because His purpose was never to accomplish His own plans but to fulfill God’s plans. Fretting is wickedness for a child of God.

Have you been propping up that foolish soul of yours with the idea that your circumstances are too much for God to handle? Set all your opinions and speculations aside and "abide under the shadow of the Almighty" ( Psalm 91:1 ). Deliberately tell God that you will not fret about whatever concerns you. All our fretting and worrying is caused by planning without God.

I have not blogged since KAF camp about the incredible things that God is doing. It is so awesome to be part of a Kingdom team. You can read Beth's thoughts here and here. The fruit that is produced by this synergy is amazing. Hundreds of lives have been changed through the ministry of this team. Beth and I are humbled to be a part of this great Kingdom venture.

I also visualize this for the local church. What would happen in my town or your town if we all leveraged our talents and abilities to build the Kingdom of God without petty competition or jealousy? Is it possible? You betcha! It is happening in cities all over the world.

Leaving CHC Lake City was a difficult decision for us. We thought we were leaving this great team and church for marketplace ministry. On the contrary, God was moving us out because He needed to touch some things in my heart and prepare us for our next assignment. Today this phrase is rolling around in my heart: "God has a plan, a people, and a place". Do I know the direction any clearer than yesterday? No. But I have a word and hope...these are the fertile soil of faith and faith makes the impossible possible!

Today is Memorial Day. I want to pause and thank God for the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. I am working at living healthier and free. I know I am coming into the best days of my life and I want to stay close and clean with my Savior. One of my life goals has been that those the closest to me to respect me more that the crowds. The only way to do that is to live authentically. This passage has come to life to me again this weekend:

Matthew 11:28 "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Only Jesus and your family know the real you. Not the crowds. Not the fans. Not the congregation. It is only living at His pace, under His teaching and lifestyle that keeps me real.

Anyone can report on the obvious or negative "facts" around them. Leadership finds a path to victory when everyone else is shouting defeat. It takes no faith or creativity to be negative. None. Nada. Zip.
Shift your thoughts. Look for a solution. Walk by faith and not by sight.

Teacher or Educator?

Some people use a lot of words but don't really say anything. Other preacher/teachers are just enamored with the sound of their own voice. Remember: our job as communicators of the gospel is transformation not just information. We teach for life change not just to prove to the listeners how much we know.
Pat Miller sent me a cute little e-mail that illustrates this principle:

According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem.

A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them, and the next day the girls would put them back.

Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses). To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required.

He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

There are teachers .. and then there are educators.

I didn’t mean to be cryptic. I am absolutely saying that I believe it doesn’t matter what model or program we choose. I don’t think the God looks at us and thinks that the Willow Creek model is His heart but NOT those crazy house church people or vice versa. I have pastored and church planted, done some things right and screwed up, too. And I have read so much, from George Barna to Bill Hybels and I can’t get away from the fact that long-lasting church growth still stems from discipleship the way Jesus did it. The man who discipled and trained me for ministry taught me that real lasting fruit is when your sons and daughters have produced sons and daughters who are producing sons and daughters. And we can teach people to do this in nearly all of these church growth models. We all know that Jesus didn’t do things by formula…He healed one time with his saliva and another time by just speaking to the sick person.
You say that ” the discussion still matters to the ones who will or won’t be reached because of our methods.” Methods don’t reach people, people reach people. Leaders in the church today want to discount another leaders method in order to validate their own method.

As for the Reformation, it most definitely needed to happen. But the Reformation was necessary due to corrupt church leadership, the Church functioning improperly as mediator between God and men and because of the teaching of non-biblical doctrines. Those are important issues that clearly violate scripture. Methods of church growth and whether or not to do small group ministry is not the same thing.

My point here is not at all to be contentious. I love Catalyst and have been many times. My point was to say that I think this debate is not an important one. I love what William Young says in “The Shack” as the character Jesus responds to Mack’s questions about the modern church- “...you are only seeing the institutions of a man-made system. That’s not what I came to build. What I see are people and their lives, a living breathing community of all those who love me, not buildings and programs.”

He uses those structures of our making but I just don’t believe that it is the concern of His heart that it has become to all of us who lead in the church. "

Until recently, most of my facebook friends were from recent years. Now our friends span from elementary school to frat brothers. Weird. Don't get me wrong...I like it. It's just strange. Think about the founding fathers or the 12 apostles staying connected through the web.
